On June 27, the European University opened the exhibition “Rehearsal of Nostalgia”, created by the European University Curatorial Circle together with the Leningrad Region Museum Agency and the Literary Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
For the first time, the exhibition features photographs from the Pushkin House collection and the Nabokov-Rukavishnikov family album, which is in the collection of the Rozhdestveno Estate Museum.
The photographs show alleys, verandas, tennis courts, picnics, bicycles — that light-drenched lost world of manor life that haunted Nabokov in memories for the rest of his life and appeared in his prose, lyrics, diaries and letters. Like Nabokov, we suggest looking at this world synesthetically: not only to look closely, but also to listen carefully, to feel the frozen images in photographs and the texts that revive them, and, as a result, into your own memories.
The exhibition will run from June 27 to September 30, Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Address: ul. Shpalernaya Street, 1, 3rd floor, European University at St. Petersburg. To visit the exhibition during the event, you need to register for Timepad.
The curatorial club is the student exhibition laboratory of the School of Arts and Cultural Heritage of the European University.
Parallel program
The exhibition program includes public events and mediations with curators.
- The dialogue between Maria Guryeva, a teacher at the School of Arts and head of the Curatorial Circle, and Ksenia Kuznetsova, a graduate student at the School of Arts and one of the curators of the Nabokov, Memory, Literature and Photography exhibition, took place on July 8 in Subscriptions.
- The first mediation with Polina Maslennikova took place on July 13 at 3:30pm.
- Natalia Tarbeeva's mediation “The Time Catcher” on July 25 and 28 focused on how to immerse yourself in memories through sensation, peering, and touch.
- Anastasia Ivanova's mediations “The Manor I Didn't Have” took place on August 19 and 24 and were dedicated to the world of summer cottages and manor spaces. Using Nabokov's texts and their own memories, participants talked about nostalgia and longing for the past, as well as about the summer cottage tradition of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Mediations were developed as part of the seminars of the Cultural Mediation Workshop of the Summer School project.
