“Performance evaluation/evaluation effectiveness”

The Museum of Russian Impressionism and the Union of Museums of Russia, with the support of the European University at St. Petersburg, will hold scientific and practical conference “Effectiveness assessment/evaluation effectiveness”, dedicated to systems for assessing the quality of museum work. Conference dates: March 17—19, 2026. Applications for participation are accepted until December 27, 2025.

At the conference, the organizers propose to discuss a range of issues related to the principles of assessing the quality of work of cultural industries in general and museums in particular.

Today, museum performance indicators most often come down to an annual increase in attendance and an organization's own income. These criteria do not always reflect the quality of the museum product, the depth of the visitor's experience and the social significance of the institution, which ultimately distorts the priorities of museum work. Museums that are unable to attract a significant network partner are forced to close the task of earning money by raising prices, canceling benefits, and commercializing inter-museum cooperation.

The conference is expected to discuss:

  • Criteria for determining success in a museum
  • Criteria for evaluating the work of a museum director
  • Examples of successful internal evaluation systems in the organization
  • The difficult achievements of museum teams
