On December 24, we invite you to Maria Rubins's lecture “Art Deco: Cultural Code and Literary Style”. The lecture is dedicated to the Art Deco style that was announced exactly a hundred years ago at the World Exhibition in Paris and defined the main aesthetic trends of the 1920s and 1930s.
The speaker considers Art Deco not only as a style of fine art, architecture, fashion or design, but also as a broader socio-cultural phenomenon that shaped the mentality, ideological priorities and social practices of the Jazz Age, and was also vividly reflected in the literature of the interwar era.
Maria Rubins is a philologist, professor at the University of London; translator; author of books and articles on Russian literature abroad, European modernism, Franco-Russian literary relations, and Israeli literature and culture. Her books published in Russian include “The Age of the Diaspora: The Trajectories of Russian Foreign Literature” (1920-2020) (M, 2021); “Russian Montparnasse: Paris Prose of the 1920s and 1930s in the Context of Transnational Modernism” (M, 2017); “Ekphrasis in Acmeist Art and European Tradition” (St. Petersburg, 2003). She has been published in the magazines New Literary Review, Zvezda, Russian Literature, Novy Zhurnal, Slavic Review, Slavic and East European Review, Russian Literature, Slavonic and East European Review; Osteuropa, Comparative Literature; Revue des études slaves; Acta Slavica Iaponica et al.
